Bruce McAttee (r) receiving the Phil Hart
Award from 2007 Awardee Doug Earle (l) at
the Spring Banquet on May 8, 2009.

Bruce McAttee

Bruce worked on his first political campaign at age 13. While in High School he kindled the passion for politics while studying American Government at Everett High School he was recommended for Wolverine Boys State in the summer of 1975.

His passion for politics and music presented him with the opportunity as a senior to go to Stockholm, Sweden as part of the Everett Chorale. In the last half of his senior year he served as an intern in the Michigan House of Representatives where he encountered Powell Lindsey who sparked his passionate interest in civil rights.

Upon graduation from Lansing Everett, young Bruce traveled to Great Britain for 10 weeks with Suitcase Theater as a Goodwill Ambassador, promoting diversity through performing arts.

In late August of 1976 he returned home to begin working at General Motors.
At GM he quickly took an avid interest in the Union finishing an Electrician Apprenticeship before taking on the responsibilities of union representation.

In November of 1982, he joined the Michigan Democratic Party and ran for Committeeman, a position he held for 8 years, until he was elected Financial Secretary Treasurer of Local 652. He served in that capacity until joining the International Staff in 1994. In 1995 he was assigned to UAW Region 1C as CAP Coordinator where he has served four Directors.

Bruce McAttee worked on too many Democratic campaigns to mention, but he is especially proud to have worked on every presidential election campaign since Jimmy Carter’s in 1976. Some of his many successes include assisting Dale Kildee secure his seat and unseating a Republican incumbent with Debbie Stabenow. He also helped Mark Schauer’s recent successful congressional campaign.
